Men's Pirate Fancy Dress

The Costume:

When it comes to men's pirate costumes, there are two main looks that you can go for – scruffy, dirty and bandana-ed à la Captain Jack Sparrow or suave, greasy and posh in the vein of Captain Hook.

For Captain Jack, go for a Caribbean style costume. As you can see above, these are the definition of what many people see when they think of 18th century scallywag pirate. Think a loose white shirt, a waistcoat, brown slightly-too-short trousers and a thick fabric sash tied around the waist.

For Captain Hook, it's all about the frills and detailing. A long red coat is essential, as is a frilled collar, white cravat and shirt, and black trousers.

The Hair and Make-up

If you do go for the suave, Captain Hook style pirate, you can get away with a bare face – just make sure you're clean and tidily shaven.

However, for a scruffier style you’re going to need to put in a little more effort. Eyeliner is the key – lots and lots of eyeliner. You will also need a tan. You can buy wash-off tan from most pharmacies; build it up and blend it into the creases of your skin for a grubby, sun-worn look. Alternatively, try our brown face paint.

The Accessories

There are a couple of key accessories that are hugely important to your overall look. For the typical pirate costume a sword, wig and bandana and eye patch are essentials. You could even add in a trusty parrot companion for good measure!

Captain Hook with be nothing without a fine head of hair, so an over-the-top curly captain wig is the way to go. Don't forget the essential musket and, of course, the pirate hook.

Women's Pirate Fancy Dress

The Costume

Women's pirate costumes generally fall into one of two camps – the seductive pirate wench or the more bad-ass pirate wench who looks like she'd give any male pirates a run for their money.

For the sexy, seductive look your costume should be mainly 18th century 'ship' girl get-up (a corset or bustier is essential, preferably worn over a loose blouse), combined with some pirate accessories such as a hat.

For a scary, sea-faring wench look go for a female version of what the men would wear – a white shirt, long coat and trousers – but add some heels and a flash of shoulder.

The Hair and Make-up

For perfect wench make-up you need to go all out with everything in your make-up kit – there's no bold eyes or lips rule here; everything should be big, bold and bright. Black rimmed eyes, lashing of mascara, obvious blusher and red lips should do the trick.

The Accessories

To complete you pirate wench outfit add a few key accessories. A pirate hat, heart shaped eye-patch and a trusty sword are perfect finishing touches.

Children’s Pirate Fancy Dress

The Costume

When buying a pirate costume for your kids, you can either go for an adult costume in miniature or go for a children's take on the outfit.

A smart, captain-like costume such as this one will make your child the star of their fancy dress party, and will make them feel super grown up, whereas a raggedy pirate look like this one is super fun and the more they get it dirty and wrinkled from playing the more authentic it looks!

Alternatively, a cute take on the outfit such as the George Pirate Pig Tabard above looks completely adorable, and is a great idea for younger kids.

The Accessories

Add accessories to your child's outfit such as a foam hat and an eye patch and sword to make sure they bag the best dressed prize in any fancy dress competitions.

A pirate costume is great fun to put together and can be adapted to suit any gender or age. Make a splash at your pirate-themed party with these great costume suggestions!
